When people talk about the future of technology, the conversation usually turns to artificial intelligence, robotics, energy or software.
Food doesn’t always make the list.
I think it should.
Food sits at the intersection of some of the biggest challenges and opportunities we’re going to face over the coming decades.
Population.
Health.
Agriculture.
Water.
Climate.
Logistics.
Biotechnology.
Manufacturing.
Data.
Artificial intelligence.
Look at food from that perspective and it stops being simply an agricultural industry.
It becomes a technology problem, a healthcare problem, an infrastructure problem and an economic opportunity at the same time.
The image many people have of agriculture is probably outdated.
Modern farming can involve satellite imagery, sensors, automated machinery, genetics, drones, sophisticated irrigation and enormous amounts of data.
AI adds another layer.
Could weather and soil information help growers make better decisions?
Could computer vision identify disease earlier?
Could predictive systems reduce unnecessary water or fertiliser use?
Could better demand forecasting reduce the amount of food that never reaches a consumer?
These aren’t abstract technology problems.
They affect real resources and real businesses.
Growing food is only one part of the system.
Once something is harvested, an enormous chain begins.
Storage.
Processing.
Manufacturing.
Packaging.
Transport.
Wholesale.
Retail.
Eventually, consumption.
Every step creates information.
Every step creates potential waste.
And every step creates opportunities for technology to improve the system.
Cold-chain monitoring alone can make an enormous difference for perishable products.
Better forecasting can help businesses understand demand.
Traceability can improve visibility across supply chains.
Automation can improve manufacturing.
AI can help analyse the enormous amount of information produced throughout the process.
The opportunity isn’t simply producing more food.
It’s building more intelligence around the food we already produce.
This is where I think the conversation becomes even more interesting.
We often separate food and healthcare into completely different industries.
Our bodies don’t.
Nutrition interacts with metabolic health, cardiovascular health, body composition and many other aspects of wellbeing.
At the same time, healthcare is becoming more personalised.
We’re collecting more information about individuals through pathology, medical histories, wearables and other sources.
That raises some fascinating long-term questions.
Could nutritional guidance become more individual?
Could healthcare professionals eventually use better-connected information to help patients understand how lifestyle relates to their specific health circumstances?
Could technology help make credible nutritional information easier to access while reducing some of the confusion created by constantly changing diet trends?
There are obvious clinical and ethical considerations, but the intersection is worth exploring.
Australia already has significant strengths in agriculture, research, food production and healthcare.
The opportunity isn’t necessarily to compete by producing the cheapest commodity.
It may be to build more sophisticated capabilities around what we already do well.
Food science.
Advanced manufacturing.
Agricultural technology.
Supply-chain intelligence.
Premium products.
Health and nutrition research.
Automation.
Export technology.
This comes back to the idea of economic complexity that I’ve been thinking about recently.
The more knowledge and capability we build around an existing industry, the more possibilities emerge.
I don’t know what the next great food technology company looks like.
That’s what makes it interesting.
Perhaps it begins with agriculture.
Perhaps logistics.
Perhaps personalised nutrition.
Perhaps biotechnology.
Perhaps reducing waste.
Or perhaps somebody connects two ideas that currently seem completely unrelated.
That’s often how innovation happens.
AI gives us better tools for exploring those possibilities, but the starting point remains the same.
Find a genuine problem.
Understand it properly.
Then ask whether technology can create a better outcome.
Food is something every person on the planet interacts with every day.
That alone makes it an extraordinary area for innovation.
But once you begin connecting food with technology, healthcare, logistics, infrastructure and artificial intelligence, the scale of the opportunity becomes much larger.
The future of food won’t simply be about what we grow.
It will also be about what we know.
How intelligently we produce it.
How efficiently we move it.
How much we waste.
And eventually, how well we understand the relationship between what we eat and our individual health.
Some of the world’s most interesting technology businesses may emerge from places we don’t traditionally think of as technology industries.
Food could be one of them.
