Some of the World’s Most Important Ideas Are Difficult to Own
We live in an economy built around ownership.
A company invents something.
It patents the technology.
It sells a product.
The business grows.
That model has created extraordinary innovation.
But I’ve been wondering about the ideas that don’t fit particularly well into it.
What happens when the solution to a problem is difficult to own?
Intellectual Property Creates Powerful Incentives
I’m a believer in intellectual property.
If somebody spends years developing a technology, there needs to be a mechanism that rewards that effort.
Otherwise competitors could simply copy the result without bearing any of the original risk.
Patents, trademarks and other forms of intellectual property create incentives to invest.
But intellectual property works best when there is something identifiable to protect.
Some valuable ideas don’t work like that.
Prevention Is Hard to Patent
Healthcare makes this easy to understand.
A new medicine may be patentable.
A new medical device may be patentable.
A diagnostic technology may be patentable.
But many things associated with better health aren’t.
Exercise.
Sleep.
Basic nutrition.
Social connection.
Reducing smoking.
Managing weight.
Participating in screening.
None of that means medicine is unnecessary. Modern pharmaceuticals and medical technology save enormous numbers of lives.
It simply means the economic structure around prevention looks very different.
There’s no single owner of “sleep eight hours.”
That changes the incentives surrounding investment, marketing and research.
Open Technology Has the Same Problem
Open-source software offers another example.
Some of the infrastructure underlying the modern internet was created by people who made their work freely available.
The economic value generated by that software can be enormous.
The creators don’t necessarily capture much of it.
We’ve found ways to make open-source ecosystems sustainable, but the tension remains.
Society can benefit enormously from things that nobody exclusively owns.
Knowledge Itself Works This Way
One scientific discovery can enable thousands of future inventions.
Basic mathematics.
Physics.
Chemistry.
Biology.
Much of this knowledge became valuable precisely because it could spread.
The person who discovered a fundamental principle didn’t necessarily capture the economic value eventually created by that knowledge.
That doesn’t make the research unimportant.
It makes funding it more complicated.
The Energy Conversation Needs Nuance
Energy is another area where these ideas often become controversial.
Claims about “free energy” or machines producing unlimited energy without an input don’t align with established physics.
But there is still a legitimate conversation about why certain energy technologies progress faster than others.
Infrastructure costs.
Regulatory barriers.
Existing assets.
Capital requirements.
Commercial models.
Technical risk.
All influence which technologies get built.
An idea can be technically interesting and economically difficult at the same time.
AI Could Make Exploration Cheaper
One possibility I find particularly interesting is what happens as AI lowers the cost of research.
If scientists can search literature faster, model hypotheses more efficiently and analyse complex datasets more cheaply, previously marginal questions may become practical to investigate.
That could expand the number of ideas we test.
Perhaps some will lead nowhere.
That’s part of science.
But reducing the cost of asking questions is still valuable.
Looking Ahead
Ownership is incredibly effective at encouraging innovation.
But it isn’t the only reason something can be valuable.
Some ideas create value precisely because everybody can use them.
Public health knowledge.
Open standards.
Scientific discoveries.
Environmental improvements.
Infrastructure.
The challenge is finding ways to reward the people who create those benefits even when the result can’t easily be placed inside a product and sold.
Because sometimes the most important idea isn’t the one somebody can own.
